Phenomenex Novum Simplified Liquid Extraction (SLE) Products Win R and D 100 Award
Torrance, Calif. (December 3, 2015) – Phenomenex Inc., a global leader in the research and manufacture of advanced technologies for the separation sciences, announced today that its Novum™ Simplified Liquid Extraction (SLE) products have been recognized as one of the top innovations of 2015 by R&D Magazine. This is the 10th Phenomenex product to receive this award in recent years. Phenomenex’ Kinetex® EVO C18 core-shell HPLC/UHPLC media was a finalist in the competition. The awards, determined by an independent judging panel and the editors of R&D Magazine, recognize the 100 most technologically significant products introduced during the past year. According to the magazine, the awards are widely regarded as the “Oscars of Innovation.” The winners represent a cross-section of industry, academia, private research firms, and government labs. Winning technologies are used in medical, industrial, research, consumer, and manufacturing applications.
According to Phenomenex president and CEO Fasha Mahjoor, “These awards reflect the depth of our product development pipeline and the fast pace at which we are able to bring innovative technologies to market.”
Novum Simplified Liquid Extraction (SLE), available in 96-well plates and 1, 3, 6, and 12 cc tubes, is a novel, synthetic alternative to traditional diatomaceous earth SLE (also known as supported liquid extraction) products. It also provides a simplified approach to traditional liquid-liquid extraction (LLE). Extraction techniques such as SLE can be used prior to performing LC and GC analysis, improving results and reducing wear and tear on instruments. As the first of its kind, the synthetic Novum SLE sorbent (patent pending) can be used with the same procedure as traditional SLE sorbents while delivering improved lot-to-lot reproducibility. Because it is a lab-manufactured sorbent, supplies are readily available, compared to diatomaceous earth, which is a natural resource that must be mined.
Novum SLE simplifies the liquid-liquid extraction process by eliminating manual steps and it reduces solvent consumption. SLE also delivers higher sample recovery than liquid-liquid extraction methods by eliminating analyte loss due to emulsions that can form at the interface of the two liquid phases.
R&D 100 Winners were announced and recognized at the R&D Technology Conference in Las Vegas on November 13. A list of winning innovations is on the R&D 100 Awards website, http://rd100awards.com/2015-rd-100-award-winners
